There are plenty of options to choose from when the drinks cart rolls around during a long-haul flight, but one veteran flight attendant issues a warning as to the one drink you should avoid while up in the air.

The effects of a long-haul flight on your body are well documented by scientists, and even if you end up scoring the best seat on the plane you're bound to leave the journey feeling worse than when you stepped on board.

That's why the arrival of the drinks cart can be a savior for many, as it allows them to relax with their beverage of choice and feel like their holiday has finally begun.

While there are clear dangers of combining a drink and a nap while on a plane, one flight attendant reveals the reason why you should steer clear of one drink in particular as the effects it has on your body are something you'd want to avoid.

What drink should you never get on a plane?

As reported by the Daily Mail, Sue Fogwell, a flight attendant of 22 years, has recommended that you never order a Bloody Mary when the drinks cart reaches your seat.

"Due to the very high sodium content, I always avoid drinking Mr&Mrs T/bloody mary mix and tomato juice," Fogwell revealed in an interview with Travel + Leisure.

The primary reasoning behind this is the dehydration that high sodium food and drinks cause within your body - and the tomato content in a Bloody Mary is a prime candidate for this.

Unfortunately, the result of decreasing air pressure as you climb into the air does make our bodies crave acidity and saltiness so we don't blame you for wanting to grab one, but it's not recommended if you're on a long flight as it'll leave you desperate for further refreshment.

Are there any other drinks you should avoid?

While a Bloody Mary is by far the biggest no-go drink according to Fogwell, she also recommends that you stay away from simple tap water or any other drinks that involve water like tea or coffee.

This is because all non-bottled water on a plane comes from the water tanks stored on board, and these aren't always going to have the nicest or freshest drinks you might be used to on the ground.

There's nothing necessarily 'wrong' with it per se, but it won't taste great and it's something you should only opt for if you're desperate - which you might be if you've just downed a Bloody Mary!
