90-year-old uses lifetime warranties to keep her 540,000 mile car running almost for free

90-year-old uses lifetime warranties to keep her 540,000 mile car running almost for free

She's the pinnacle of financial savviness

We're all a little frugal with our money then and then.

Vouchers and coupons can save us a penny or two even in the long run.

But one woman took her frugality to another level.

90-year-old Rachel Veitch from the US used lifetime warranties so she could drive her beloved 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente for free essentially.

Financially-wise Rachel originally bought her car, which she calls Chariot, for $3,289 and proudly boasts: 'All deluxe, power steering, auto, air conditioning.'

She's owned Chariot for decades and travelled more than 540,000 miles across the country.

Rachel has always managed to keep her vehicle in tip-top condition without ever breaking the bank.

'Wherever possible, she bought parts with lifetime warranties,' explained Marc Middleton from GrowingBolder.

Bringing out her book full of services, checkups, warranties and milestones, Rachel pointed out: 'This is the 5th Midas muffler with lifetime guarantee. I’ve had 7. This is the shocks warranty from Sears. I’ve had three.'

Turning the page, she added: 'This is the lifetime guarantee battery from Penny’s. Penny’s still pays for it but Firestone puts it in. I’ve had 16 free batteries.'

Imagine how much money she has saved over the years, especially with how much everything has gone up in price.

Even when the car goes in for service, Rachel doesn't leave her vehicle's side 'even for a moment.' She showed an old photograph of her younger self with the mechanic and her beloved car in the background.

To this day, she shows the mechanics a diagram of the car that indicates all the exact areas that need to be 'lubed'.

She continued: 'The 6,000-mile checkup cost $13 dollars. That wouldn’t buy a gasket now.'

Despite her age, Rachel is not fazed by driving more than 3,000 miles at a time in her trusty Chariot by herself.

Amusingly, Rachel proudly displays the car's 500,000-mile achievement in its back window.

Speaking to Growing Bolder, she claims she's not afraid to travel and even showed off her permitted handgun she keeps inside Chariot just in case.

'She has never cheated on me, never lied to me and I can always depend on her,' Rachel laughed.

Rachel's family are unsure how they'll handle the day when Chariot stops running, but for now, the tale of the two continues.
