Yale University has become the latest institution to make its tuition completely free for certain families after it announced a major change it is making.
New undergraduates joining the school who come from families that earn under $100,000 a year will be eligible for free tuition and other costs subsidized.
Yale will also waive tuition - although not all costs - for anyone from families earning less than $200,000.
And this isn’t the only Ivy League institution to update its policies when it comes to students from low income backgrounds.

The likes of Harvard University are also now offering students free tuition for families with incomes up to $200,000, while those with families earning under $100,000 will get tuition plus housing, meals and insurance covered.
Scott Strobel, who is the provost of Yale University, said: “This strategic investment is central to our mission to educate exceptional students from all backgrounds. The benefits are evident as these talented students enrich the Yale campus and go on to serve their communities after graduation.”
Along with Yale and Harvard, other schools including Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Pennsylvania have moved towards making free tuition available for low income students.
The news about Yale has reached social media, with one post on X, formerly Twitter, stating: “BREAKING: Yale tuition price being lowered to $0 for any families making under $200k/year.”
This has sparked many people to take to the X comment section to share their own reactions to the announcement, with one user writing: “That’s a huge step towards affordable education for many families.”
Another said: “That's an incredible move by Yale! It will make higher education more accessible and benefit countless families.”

A third person commented: “i spent 150k during my time at yale. ill probably be paying it off for 60 years..... will i be getting a refund???”
And a fourth added: “Crazy and first time I’m impressed with something the education system does in a long time.”
The news also prompted some famous faces to weigh in too, with MrBeast adding his two cents to the matter.
The YouTuber, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, took to X to write: “Huge, schools with big endowments should use it to help students more. What else could be the point of stacking so much money? Good job Yale.”
This could be set to open the doors for many students who face financial obstacles in higher education.
