Trump suggests new name for the New Mexico following Apple Maps push to update Lake Ontario
Just days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to controversially change the name of Lake Ontario, he is now suggesting a rebrand for the state of New Mexico.
On August 27, Trump revealed at the Oval Office that he was domestically changing the name of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’, subsequently requesting for Maps app to make the switch and adopt the lake’s new name.
The US president also shared a poster with the press which read: “Making the Great Lakes Even Greater.”
This came just months after Trump had decided to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and now it seems that he has turned his focus to New Mexico.

The southern state got its name from Spanish explorers back in the 1500s, when they named the region ‘Nuevo México’ and continued to use that name after the area became part of the United States in 1848.
In 1912, the land officially became a state under the same name but the US leader now wants to change it to ‘New America’.
On his own social media platform Truth Social, Trump shared an outline of the state with its name crossed out and proposed change written in its place.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the official account for the White House reshared this post from the president, which prompted many people to take to the internet themselves to share their own reactions to it.
One user said: “The federal government can't rename a state.”
Another wrote: “So what will we call New York? And New Hampshire, and New Jersey… lol.”
A third person commented: “Isn't it bad enough that we stole 55% of Mexico's sovereign territory in the 1800s? Put the crayons down Donnie and take a nap.”
And a fourth added: “If they don't want the state of New Mexico anymore, they should give it back.”
Speaking to Fox News Digital, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham stated that the name of the state ‘isn’t up for debate, it’s been ours since before the United States existed’.
She went on to add: “What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families.
“Under Democratic leadership here in New Mexico, we’re providing families with free childcare and college, protecting access to health care and investing in housing. While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work.”
