Donald Trump is getting into the smartphone game, and after launching his meme coin in 2025, it looks like the President of the United States is keen to prove he's just as tech-savvy as former 'First Buddy' Elon Musk.

The POTUS has a love for all things gold, and alongside his plans for a Golden Dome defense system and $5 million gold card for citizenship, he's unveiled the $499 golden T1 smartphone.

While many expected Elon Musk to rival the iPhone with a Tesla phone, Trump Mobile is new on the market and is pushing its American credentials. Still, there are already claims that it's a 'scam' that won't even be built in the USA, while Shark Tank's Mark Cuban has suggested it could be a front to push Trump's $TRUMP meme coin.

It's not just $499 you'll be shelling out for the T1, as anyone who signs up to Trump Mobile will be subjected to $47.75 a month as part of the '47 Plan'.

For this price, you'll get international calls to over 100 countries, telehealth services, Drive America roadside assistance, and "complete device protection." Trump Mobile taps into existing networks of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), effectively reselling their packages.

As for the $47.45, it's a nod to his time as both the 45th and 47th President of the United States. The 47 Plan is another wink to his current reign as the 47th President. Considering the gold T1 is etched with the American flag, it's a well-put-together patriotic package.

Trump Mobile claims it represents 'American values', adding: "We’re here to put freedom and fairness back in your hands with reliable coverage, no-nonsense pricing, and customer support that treats you like family. With Trump Mobile, you don’t just get a phone plan — you get service powered by American pride, freedom, and integrity."

Still, there are plenty of concerns when it comes to Trump Mobile, namely a conflict of interest between ruling the country and pushing his own business ventures.

Then there are questions about whether the T1 will actually be built in America. Especially as its reveal comes after Trump threatened to slap Apple with a 25% tariff if it didn't increase iPhone production in the USA.

Over on Reddit, consumers shared their concerns that the T1 is a pipe dream that will simply take people's downpayments and never materialize, or arrive with severely downgraded specs.

One skeptic wrote: "It seems utterly unfathomable that you could build a phone with this set of specs, at this price, to be delivered in September.

“Either Trump Mobile has done something truly remarkable here (and I’d bet you a T1 Phone 8002 that it hasn’t), or the phone it ends up shipping will not be the one buyers are expecting."

Another grumbled: "They are just betting that enough BS is going down between now and September that people will forget they put $100 down on this vaporware."

A third concluded: "It’s nothing but fluff to get folks to transfer their existing phones to their new service… with false hopes and dreams of the development of a $499 Made in America Android Phone coming out sooon…. Shoot, the industry as it stands now can’t even make them overseas for $499 🙄."
