A woman living in Russia has been hit with a fine after she generated an AI image as part of a prank that resulted in widespread panic.
The woman in question is a resident of the Magdagachi settlement in the Amur region, close to the Chinese border, an area that is known for its growing bear population.
Seemingly a joke, she enlisted the help of ChatGPT to generate an artificially intelligent image of a brown bear on a local road and sent it to a friend.
However, things started to spiral out of control as the image was shared on various messaging apps amongst locals, leading to wildlife rangers being dispatched to the town.

In a statement, the Amur court press service said: “The joke quickly got out of control. The photograph of the bear spread through messaging apps, and police began receiving alarmed calls from residents.”
The woman fessed up to the crime by calling the police to report what she had done and, as a result, she was ordered in court to pay a fine of 15,000 roubles ($178).
Many people have taken to social media to share their own reactions to the news, with one user writing on X, formerly Twitter: “Ai will still put some people in big problems if care is not taken.”
And another added: “It's boring in Siberia.”
It is thought that the reason for the panic is due to an increase in bear attacks. According to Reuters, the news agency RIA Novosti confirmed that 26 people have been killed in bear attacks since spring this year.
It has also been reported that in 2026 alone, more than 3,440 bears have been killed after it was deemed they were posing a threat to human life.

In September, the Russian government set out plans to control the bear population after it was revealed that the number of brown bears in the nation has doubled in the last 30 years to a whopping 308,000 bears.
Russia’s deputy prime minister, Denis Manturov, stated that ‘systemic measures are needed’ to prevent it from getting out of control.
Moscow has confirmed that it will consider lifting the hunting quotas set on brown bears and may decide to give local authorities additional power to control their own populations of bears, as well as provide extra financial help to certain regions to help them with controlling numbers.
