Rockstar Games could be remaking one of the greatest video games of all time

Gamers have been waiting years for this one to arrive

One keen-eyed gamer has spotted a hint that Rockstar Games could be lining up a remake or remaster for one of the best games ever made, and it might just be what we need to pass the time before GTA 6 releases next year.

Rockstar Games hasn't been the most prolific developer over the past two console generations especially, having released just a single new game since Grand Theft Auto V dropped back in 2013.

The studio has relied heavily on rereleases and graphical enhancements of older titles - including the aforementioned GTA 5, which has now had two separate visual overhauls that continue to support the insanely popular online mode.

Recent releases have brought the Grand Theft Auto trilogy and Red Dead Redemption into the current gaming generation in 'Definitive' form, but one incredibly popular title has been left unattended, and that has frustrated many.

That could soon change, however, thanks to a new 'leak' of sorts on Rockstar's website, with fans eagerly anticipating a remaster or remake in the near future.

What game could Rockstar Games be remaking?

As reported by Comicbook.com, one user on the r/reddeadredemption subreddit has spotted a telling option on the Rockstar Support website that could appear to suggest that an upgraded version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally on the way.

While you can play RDR2 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S right now, it is heavily hampered by limitations to the resolution and frame rate that allowed it to run on the less powerful hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One.

While most developers quickly released patches to their games that allowed them to take advantage of the PS5's increased performance, Rockstar has remained radio silence, and became resigned to the fact that Red Dead 2 would simply never receive the upgrade it deserves.

However, this technical slip up on the Rockstar website could suggest that an upgrade is coming, as a similar feature was available when GTA 5 made the jump from one console generation to the next.

Online migration would only be necessary if people needed to move their character from one game to the next, whereas it has never been an issue with Red Dead Online so far as people are still playing the PS4/Xbox One version, even though it's on newer consoles.

What appears to confirm it even more for some is the fact that Rockstar has now removed this option from the support website, suggesting that it wasn't supposed to be there as the upgrade hasn't yet been announced.

Some people understandably thought that the post was fake in order to generate false hype, but multiple people have reported also seeing the option before it was taking down, all but confirming it was there.

"Oh yeah it's happening for sure now," writes one excited commenter. "Same thing happened when GTA 5 enhanced dropped." Another excited added: "IT'S HAPPENING GUYS PS5 ENHANCED PERFORMANCE MODE DROPPING SOON!!"

On top of this, a new update for Red Dead Online that brings back a fan favorite DLC has only further added to the speculation, as the mode has been largely untouched by Rockstar in recent years.

What would a PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 involve?

It's unclear whether Rockstar would opt for a remaster/remake or a simple enhanced update of Red Dead Redemption 2, but it's highly likely that any new version of the game would come with improvements to the frame rate and visual fidelity.

Currently the game runs at a non-native 4K resolution at 30 fps with no alternative options, whereas you'd imagine that an update would provide a 'Fidelity' and 'Framerate' selection that would allow players to choose between native 4K resolution or 60 fps with upscaling.

There would also likely be enhancements specific to Sony's new PlayStation 5 Pro model, combining the native resolution of fidelity modes with a higher frame rate that's simply not possible on base consoles.

Many have also speculated that a new update could add ray traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, making an already visually jaw-dropping game even more stunning.

The Enhanced edition of GTA 5 brought these highly demanding visual features to the game, so it wouldn't be too out of the question for any RDR2 update to also include it - although it could be limited to the PS5 Pro and PC versions due to performance concerns.

Some have even speculated that the game could also be ported over to the Nintendo Switch 2 thanks to the new console's significant power increase, and that would certainly be an impressive feat for a game as demanding as this.
