Reason why Apple got rid of 'iconic' feature on its MacBooks

Apple decided against continuing its fan-favourite feature.

Apple was recognised for one of its iconic features on its MacBook products.

The illuminating bitten-apple logo had been around for over two decades and had become an integral design element of Apple's notebooks.

However, the tech giant decided to remove the iconic feature for three reasons.

When the 12-inch MacBook was released, it was slimmer than any other model than any of its previous MacBooks. The device measured only 13.1 mm thick and was 24% thinner than the MacBook Air.

Due to its ultra-thin design, coupled with the transparent Apple logo, if users were to sit where there was a strong light behind the screen, they'd be able to see a subtle hotspot in the centre of the display.

Apple users reported colour inaccuracies when using the MacBook outside or in bright light conditions.

Furthermore, since the glowing Apple logo was only a cutout, it became a weakpoint in the slim laptop, causing 'structural rigidity issues' and making it easy for the MacBook to bend.

In response to this, Apple decided to fill in the cutout with a piece of metal to maintain its structural strength.

The third reason why Apple decided to discontinue the iconic illuminating logo was due to its change in its brand strategy.

Like every other major tech company, Apple had a reputation for plastering its logo over every product it launched.

When former Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a comeback to the company in 1999, he wanted the glowing logo to be a public reminder that Apple is still launching cool tech products.

However, as years went on and Apple became bigger, it settled on becoming more subtle with its designs and didn't need to rely on the glowing logo anymore.

Nevertheless, devoted Apple fans are missing the old designs, with some people wishing the tech company kept the thicker screens if it meant keeping the Apple light.

One comment replied to the explanation YouTube video: 'If Steve was still with us, he’d want Apple to fix the screen issue without taking out the apple light'.

Another comment read: 'The glowing apple was so iconic. I’ve had macs all my life but the first MacBook I ever bought was the 2017 MacBook. [...] Can’t believe they got rid of it. I hope they bring it back eventually.'

And another viewer pointed out: 'The glowing apple logo was so iconic and I really liked the way it looked in the dark. I wish they kept it even it meant having a slightly thicker display.'
