Spotify reveals another price increase for all US customers next month

It's the third price increase in four years for Spotify

Spotify subscribers will soon have to stomach another price increase, as the popular music streaming service has announced further cost bumps to all of its Premium tiers next month.

While there is strong competition from options like Apple Music, Tidal, and YouTube Music, it's undeniable that Spotify is the most popular when it comes to streaming services, and for many it's simply a case of familiarity.

When you've been subscribing to the same service for years it can be tough to welcome a change of scenery, but the rise of certain AI artists and the promotion of politically controversial adverts have prompted some to look for a new home.

By far the biggest motivating factor for anyone looking to move away from Spotify though is the price, and that's certainly not going away any time soon as the company revealed further subscription cost increases coming next month.

It was only last October that Spotify users in the United States had to put up with the last price increase, yet as per Variety, the service announced its third price hike in four years, affecting all Premium users no matter what tier you subscribe to.

According to a statement from Spotify, "occasional updates to pricing across our markets reflect the value that Spotify delivers, enabling us to continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists."

For some that's simply not enough though, and it might finally be the catalyst they needed to look for an alternative.

Here is how much each plan will be following the newly announced price increases:

  • Student: $6.99/month (from $5.99/month)
  • Individual: $12.99/month (from $11.99/month)
  • Duo: $18.99/month (from $16.99/month)
  • Family: $21.99/month (from $19.99/month)

While it might remain the cheapest, the Student plan is actually receiving the biggest increase by percentage, jumping up just under 17 percent from its previous figure. Both the Duo and Family plans have increased between 10 and 11 percent, whereas the Individual subscribers will 'only' have to pay 8 percent more.

It's unclear when the price hikes will actually come into play right now, but Spotify has asserted that it'll be within the next month, so likely in late January or early February.

"I'm just so tired of Spotify," wrote one disgruntled subscriber on X. "Are you purposefully trying to price people off of your app? Like you guys have record breaking profits. I seriously don't f***ing get it," they continued.

Another noted that YouTube Premium is only $1 more per month now and that comes with all of the benefits of the video platform too, with a third noting that it's "time to move to YouTube premium."
