In a year that’s already said goodbye to legends including Beetlejuice’s Catherine O’Hara, Dawson’s Creek’s James Van Der Beek, and The Godfather’s Robert Duvall, Hollywood is mourning another tragic loss.
This time, Grey’s Anatomy’s Eric Dane has passed away at the age of 53, following a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
Announcing his diagnosis with the fatal neurodegenerative disease in April 2025, Dane became a spokesperson for ALS, even taking his fight to the White House. Sadly, it’s a fight that he ultimately lost.
Starting with a recurring role as Jason Dean on the TV series Charmed, Dane became a household name as he set pulses racing as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy.

Playing the womanizing doctor from 2006–2012, Sloan was memorably killed off in one of the show’s most heartbreaking stunts, later returning for a cameo beyond the grave in 2021.

It’s said that Dane died from complications of ALS less than a year after he went public with his diagnosis, and in honor of the actor, Netflix has released a heartbreaking final interview.
Shared on the streaming giant’s official X account, Dane is seen discussing his marriage to Rebecca Gayheart as part of Netflix’s Famous Last Words series. This is the same documentary that posthumously published an interview with Jane Goodall.
Talking about Gayheart and their separation, Dane admitted: “Well, we still love each other deeply. I just think we don't want to live with each other.
“But, there's a lot of love there. I will have never, by the time anybody sees this, have fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with her. She’s the mother of my children.”
Gayheart filed for divorce from Dane back in February 2018, citing “irreconcilable differences" after 14 years of marriage. It’s said that she filed to dismiss the petition after seven years of separation in March 2025.
Saying that their romance happened in an “organic and fortuitous way,” Dane continued: “I met Rebecca, and I turned to her friend, and I said ‘I’m going to marry that girl’.”
When asked how he knew, Dane said he had ‘no idea’, but added that: “I had no idea how serious I was in that moment, but I said that.”
Apparently, Gayheart’s friend said that she’d never break up with her fiancé whom she’d been with since the age of 15, although Dane was right, and four years later, they were married.
In a heartbreaking parting comment, Dane said: “I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life where it’s supposed to happen.”
Responding to the video, one person said: “Eric Dane using his last months to record a secret goodbye for his daughters is the most heartbreaking thing you will see this year.
“McSteamy was just a character but the way he handled als with this much grace and vulnerability shows who he really was. his legacy is finally at peace.”
Another added: “Eric Dane didn't use his last interview to settle scores or sell a narrative. He used it to bury the one woman he never stopped loving, in the softest way possible.
A third said: “There’s something heavy about hearing someone speak knowing they chose their last words carefully. and that line about Rebecca… that’s the kind of love people spend a lifetime hoping to feel even once ❤️.”
Tributes continue to pour in for Dane, with Grey’s Anatomy co-stars including Patrick Dempsey, Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, and Sarah Drew all sharing their memories with the late actor.
