Netflix has dropped a new disaster mini-series that’s got fans hooked.

Christmas is only a week away and while most are cosying up with festive movies in the countdown to the 25th, others are binge-watching disaster dramas.

The show has already racked up over 900 million viewing hours worldwide.

Although it’s not based on a true story, the series is set on the real-life Canary Island of La Palma, off the west coast of Africa - And La Palma is known for the most active volcanic ridge in the Canary Islands, Cumbre Vieja.

You can watch the trailer below:

Released on December 12, La Palma is a Norwegian four-part drama that has quickly claimed the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s global TV charts.

Netflix's new hit follows a family on a Christmas vacation to the island, only for their holiday to take a terrifying turn when a young scientist and a team of geologists encounter a potentially catastrophic volcanic eruption on the island.

The four-episode limited series stars Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Westworld), Alma Günther, Bernard Storm Lager, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Meg) and Jorge de Juan.

The miniseries has gone down well with many viewers with one fan hailing it '10/10 stars' and a second classing it as 'insane'.

Over on the X (formerly Twitter) platform, fans claimed to have binged the 'amazing' series in just one evening.

'"La palma" on Netflix got me reading about climate change, volcanic eruption and the Canary Islands,' an X user tweeted.

Other viewers had a more emotional experience watching the mini-series.

"Ignore La Palma on Netflix unless you want to cry like a baby and get all emotional and s**t," one individual commented.

"This Netflix show La Palma is giving me so much anxiety," another tweet read.

Whilst some reviewers have praised La Palma's 'stunning visuals' and 'engaging' storytelling, not everyone is a fan of the characters and their decision-making.

"We’re boarding a plane to avoid a major catastrophic event and you leave us to go find some b***h you met at the pool?!" one person vented. "This girl deserves to die I hate her so muchhhhh."

Another X user criticised: '"The Netflix series La Palma about a volcanic eruption and tsunami is perhaps the worst series I've ever seen. And I see some very bad things, eh."

La Palma is available to stream now on Netflix.
