Insane footage shows thousands stuck in 'nightmarish' 8-hour traffic jam

You wouldn't want to get stuck in this on the way home

There's nothing worse than getting stuck in a traffic jam on your way home from work, but the average delay that you'll encounter pales in comparison to what residents of Gurugram had to suffer on Monday night.

Most of the world's biggest and most densely populated cities have multiple forms of transportation to give options when it comes to getting around, but most still tend to opt for their own trusty cars.

Millions can flood the roads after they finish work every day, and while roads can be specifically designed to handle this amount of traffic, it can often reach a point where it's too much.

That's where jams and holdups start to become a problem, but one of India's wealthiest suburbs experienced this to an extreme degree on Monday, as rain-triggered traffic was help up for upwards of eight hours on the highway.

As reported by the BBC, traffic appeared to stretch more than 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) at its longest point on one particular road, with many expressing their frustration at the 'nightmarish' conditions that led to the jam.

It appears to all be linked to severe rainfall over the last few days, as weather warnings were issued in Delhi and the surrounding cities. In particular, the Yamuna river has crossed the danger threshold, causing some flooding, and one major bridge has been closed as a consequence.

It's particularly surprising to many that an area like Gurugram has been affected though, leading many to question whether the suburb was prepared on an infrastructural level for a situation like this.

Some across social media have joked that you pay "10s of crores for an apartment in Gurugram that turns into an island whenever it rains a little," whereas others have called for the government and politicians to "take some responsibility for the total collapse of Gurugram," adding that "this extent of damage is not acceptable at all."

Gurugram's disaster management authorities have urged people attending offices and schools to work from home wherever possible, although many remained stuck in the horrendous traffic jam because they were simply trying to get home from their jobs.

"That's not a jam, that's a citywide sleepover with headlights on," joked on commenter on Reddit, but it does definitely beg the question as to what you're supposed to do in terms of bathroom breaks and sleep when the traffic jam stretches hours into the night.
