Mark Zuckerberg's Meta files new lawsuit over NSFW 'nudify' apps

The apps claim they are able to 'nudify' people without their consent

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has filed a new lawsuit over NSFW ‘nudify’ apps.

The social media giant is suing a company that has been advertising AI apps across Meta platforms.

These AI app known as CrushAI is purported to allow users to ‘nudify’ people without consent.

Now, Zuckerberg’s firm has filed a lawsuit against the Hong Kong-based company, Joy Timeline, in a bid to put a stop to these advertisements.

The ads were found by CBS News to be displayed on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads.

In a statement, Meta said: “This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it.

“We’ll continue to take the necessary steps – which could include legal action – against those who abuse our platforms like this.”

Through the suit, Meta hopes to stop Joy Timeline from listing its ads on the social platforms after it claimed that the firm had made ‘multiple attempts… to circumvent Meta’s ad review process’.

CBS News had conducted an investigation into the nudify apps, discovering that there were hundreds visible across various Meta platforms.

As a result, Meta informed the news outlet that it has now removed a number of these ads as well as deleting accounts that are running them.

In a post on the Meta website, it read: “Today, we’ve filed a lawsuit against the entity behind CrushAI and are taking other steps to clamp down on nudify apps.

“We’re building new technology to detect ads for nudify apps and sharing signals about these apps with other tech companies so they can take action too.

“We have strict rules against non-consensual intimate imagery – whether it’s real or AI-generated – including the promotion of nudify apps.”

The tech giant also revealed that it is tightening up its detection technology to put a stop to these ads before they appear on Meta platforms.

Meta continued: “We’ve developed new technology specifically designed to identify these types of ads – even when the ads themselves don’t include nudity – and use matching technology to help us find and remove copycat ads more quickly.

“We’ve worked with external experts and our own specialist teams to expand the list of safety-related terms, phrases and emojis that our systems are trained to detect within these ads.

“We’ve also applied the tactics we use to disrupt networks of coordinated inauthentic activity to find and remove networks of accounts operating these ads.”
