Inside world’s first floating theme park built on an old oil rig

Inside world’s first floating theme park built on an old oil rig

If you're an adrenaline seeker, Saudi Arabia might be next on your bucket list.

Saudi Arabia is soon to be home to the world’s first floating theme park - and it's built entirely on an oil rig.

Spread across 74 acres, this unique attraction called 'The Rig' rests atop a decommissioned oil rig in the Arabian Gulf, 40 km away from the nearest piece of land.

Guests will be able to have their pick from over 70 activities including ziplines, obstacle courses, rollercoasters, cable cars and many more.

There will be various extreme sports available, along with a flying restaurant, a pool, a Ferris wheel and a massive arena.

The restaurants aren't so much a break from the excitement either as one appears to look more like a ride than a place to eat a meal. It sits guests high up in the air, hundreds of feet above the water as they dine.

If theme park rides aren't your thing, the more risk-averse people can enjoy the provided cinema, E-sport zones, multi-purpose arena and retail park - there really is something for everyone.

Furthermore, guests will be able to relax in a selection of 800 rooms across three luxury hotels, overlooking the surrounding water.

The park's theme is focused on 'thrilling adventure' with the tagline, 'The True Scale of Adventure', delivering adventure tourists a whole new playground.

It's described as: 'The world's first tourism destination on an offshore platform inspired by the design of offshore oil platforms.'

The one-of-a-kind destination has two onshore terminals in Dammam City and Jubail Industrial City, so visitors can reach the island by ferry, plane or helicopter.

Developers of The Rig announced: 'This is no theme park – it’s an extreme destination, an entirely new playground for adventure tourism.'

The park's creators project the theme park to host 10,000 visitors per day by 2032 during peak times.

It's also been announced that The Rig is set to build a skyscraper that's as tall as the Eiffel Tower, overlooking an artificial lake that's also in the works.

Alongside this, The Line is a $1 trillion project that's set to be a horizontal 105-mile-long skyscraper.

The Rig's development is being led by the Oil Park Development Company, with support being backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund Strategy to 'solidify the Kingdom’s position as a leading tourist destination known for its unique landmarks'.

This is one of many of Saudi Arabia's ambitious long-term projects to eliminate its reliance on oil.
