A freak accident saw a teenager electrocuted by his own necklace, after it came into contact with the exposed prong of a plug.

Oklahoma-based Danielle Davis, 38, told MailOnline that she was woken up on the night of April 30 by a scream coming from her son Rayce Ogdahl's room.

She found her 16-year-old son covered in "scorched burns" across his neck.

The photos are pretty shocking, with the chain leaving a pretty horrific burn mark around Ogdahl's neck. When he managed to rip the necklace off and throw it on his bed, it burnt a deep hole in the mattress.

Ogdahl reportedly told his mom he had been electrocuted by his own necklace, which had a cross on its end, after the jewellery had come into contact with the exposed prong of the plug in an extension cord.

According to MailOnline, Ogdahl was admitted to the intensive care unit of Health Baptist Medical Center's burns unit in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

He suffered second, third and fourth degree burns, with reports saying he would likely be scarred for life from the incident.

While it was a freak accident, it's a good reminder to be careful with power cords - particularly when you're in bed. Ogdahl was apparently in bed when he heard something fall off, so he leaned over to check his phone was still charging.

Davis told the MailOnline: "When he did, the cross necklace around his neck made contact with the prongs from the plug in an extension cord which were just barely exposed.

"He said he was completely conscious through the whole thing and was aware he was being electrocuted. Because everything was metal, it made a complete circuit around his neck. It was like a hot coil.

"And he has burns on his hands from trying to rip his chain around his neck... It was a thick, heavy chain."

Davis said the family is "just so grateful he's OK", telling the MailOnline: "He could've easily died that night. It was amazing he was still conscious and could still alert us. It would've been a different story.

"When it comes to your phone, there's not a text message or notification that is important enough to have your phone on your bed. Anything can happen and Rayce is proof of that.

"Pay attention to your cords and I would recommend to anybody don't use extension cords at all."
