Man gives up 10-year search for lost Bitcoin fortune that could be worth $8,000,000,000

He's been kicking himself for the past decade

Imagine the feeling of accidentally throwing away your lottery ticket, only to find you've got the winning numbers.

While we dread to think what it feels like to know you've disposed of a life-changing sum, even millions on the lottery pales in comparison to the supposed fortune James Howells is said to have lost to a landfill site.

Despite its naysayers, the price of Bitcoin has continued to climb and has reached record levels in 2025.

This is a kick in the crotch for Howells, who's spent over 10 years searching for his missing Bitcoin wallet.

A tragic chain of events unfolded back in 2013, with a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin (BTC) being thrown out when cleaning his office.

Howells has tried everything to try and locate the mobile phone-sized hard drive, even turning to AI in a last-ditch attempt to find his million.

The original worth of his wallet was just £4 million ($5.07 million), it would currently be worth an eye-watering $919,767,200, but as the price approaches a sum that could make Howells a billionaire, he's finally giving up his search.

In words that are sure to haunt him, Howells admitted: "I had a clearout of my old IT equipment - I hadn't used this drive for over three years, I believed I'd taken everything off it... so it got thrown in the bin."

His ex is said to have taken the rubbish to landfill, where it was buried under up to 200,000 tons of waste.

More than just losing an important document or receipt that means you can't return an item of clothing, throwing out millions of dollars is an almost unthinkable situation.

According to Bitcoin Archive, Howells is throwing in the towel when it comes to trying to track down his hard drive in a Welsh landfill site. Even though Howells has appealed numerous times to gain access to the Docksway landfill site from Newport Council, he was then accused of trying to blackmail the local authority. The council has continued to fight Howells' case, and as well as saying it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, there were concerns about the environmental damage of the search and whether he'd even legally be able to claim the Bitcoin as his own after it was thrown out.

Ultimately, a High Court ruling dismissed Howells' claim in January 2025 and stopped this digital treasure hunt in its tracks.

If Howells wasn't already down enough, his 8,000 BTC is expected to be worth some $8 billion by 2030. Considering Forbes claims there are only 3,028 individuals who are billionaires in 2025, Howells could've been part of a very exclusive club.

There might be one slight silver lining, and while we doubt it'll make him $8 billion, Howells' story is due to be adapted. Back in May 2025, the BBC reported how an American production company had purchased the rights to his Bitcoin blunder.

Titled The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells, the series is said to chart the early days of Bitcoin, what happened to Howells' wallet, the ensuing legal battle, and the high-tech plans he tried to use to find his missing millions.

Hyping the project, Howells claimed he has over 200 offers from BAFTA and Emmy-winning production companies, adding: "Every man and his dog wanted to film this."

It's not quite $8 billion, but hopefully it'll take the sting out of his tragedy.
