Controversial 'suicide pod' has 'special requirements' that will limit certain users

The pod has currently only been designed for a select group of people.

Warning: This article mentions topics of suicide and euthanasia.

Dr. Philip Nitschke, better known as Dr. Death or 'the Elon Musk of assisted suicide' recently shed more details on his self-assisted death pod.

Dr. Nitschke's invention of the Sarco Pod, with the help of Exit International, has been making headlines, mostly for its controversy.

Though a commissioned Swiss legal expert found that the machine did not break any laws in its Switzerland base, it still raised concerns among other lawyers.

The assisted suicide organisation Dignitas also mentioned that it would be unlikely to meet 'much acceptance' in the eyes of the law.

In a Q&A conference with Florian Willet, a former spokesman for Dignitas Germany, Dr. Nitschke shared his chilling intentions with the 3D-printed pod.

The Australian euthanasia advocate also mentioned how some people would be restricted from using the machine because of a certain criterion.

Currently, the Sarco Pod can only be used by people who are no taller than 177 centimetres.

However, the doctor did state that newer versions in the future would accommodate taller people.

Dr. Nitschke previously explained that those wishing to use the Sarco must answer a series of questions beforehand. This is to fully understand whether the person is of sound mind and knows their decision.

Assisted suicide has been legal in Switzerland since 1937, provided the person assisting has no selfish motives.

That said, the assisted suicide organisation The Last Resort which showcased the device currently has no collaboration with other euthanasia organisations in Switzerland.

The pods cost between $4,000 (£3,100) and $8,000 (£6,200) and are nearly ready to be rolled out in Switzerland. Although, the Sarco has been extensively tested in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the machine has not been used on any animals or humans, only in instrument testing.

Reportedly, the creator designed the Sarco to be purple, a colour that signifies dignity.

This ties in well with the machine's purpose which is supposed to activate a short, painless and 'almost euphoric' death at the press of a button. The pod, which can be placed anywhere, is flooded with nitrogen to reduce the oxygen levels rapidly. As a result, the individual inside would lose consciousness and die in approximately 10 minutes.

The Last Resort assured that membership is not required to use the pod, it's entirely up to the individual.
