MapQuest beats Google Maps to top spot after refusing Trump's order to change name of Lake Ontario

President Donald Trump has continued to put Canada in his crosshairs, and alongside trying to claim The Great White North as the 51st state, he's now tried to rename Lake Ontario as part of his ongoing trade feud with Mark Carney.

You might remember Donald Trump's infamous trade tariffs pushing up the prices of imported goods, with the President of the United States even levying restrictions against one of the world's remotest places that's largely populated by penguins.

Trump has been on the warpath "in response to Canada's discriminatory treatment of American products," but as well as his new 50% hit on imported electronics, he's directed federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America.

The White House has confirmed that Trump directly contacted Apple to ensure the name was changed on Apple Maps, while Google has responded to how it'll handle things on Google Maps.

With MapQuest standing defiant against the POTUS, it's soared in popularity.

As reported by TechCrunch, MapQuest has hit No.1 on the Apple App Store in terms of navigation apps in the USA. More than this, it reached No. 2 in Canada's overall App Store, and No. 4 in the USA's East Coast for all apps (not including games).

In a statement, MapQuest general manager Doug Berger said: "We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they’re familiar with. Hundreds of thousands of people signaled to us this weekend that we got it right by downloading our app.”

Continuing to find the lighter side of the situation, the 30-year-old mapping company released its own online tool that lets you rename Lake Ontario whatever you want and then share it on social media.

We previously saw MapQuest do the same when Trump tried to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

In terms of Google Maps, it reflects name changes from official government sources, as shown in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). This means those in the USA will see Lake Ontario as Lake America, while those in Canada will see Lake Ontario, and people in other countries will see both names.

More than being controversial, critics see it as confusing.

Not content with shading President Trump, MapQuest also mocked Apple with a post on X. Sharing a picture of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' poisoned apple with a bite taken out of it, MapQuest was largely cheered for its defiance.

Supporting the company, one person wrote: "You got me back as a subscriber. Downloaded the app a few days ago and the performance on it is actually a lot better than Google maps!"

Another added: "What an amazing time. MapQuest comeback was not on my 2026 Bingo card."

A third concluded: "You got me to all my sleepovers as a kid."

Referring to itself as the "OG of online mapping," it seems many think MapQuest is the GOAT of online mapping.
