While the staggered release of the Epstein files is revealing the horrifying details that made up the convicted child sex offender's life, many wonder how exactly the police were first alerted to his activities, with timelines tracking back to 2005.
Epstein had already been sexually abusing and trafficking young girls far earlier than that, with evidence emerging from close associate Ghislaine Maxwell's criminal case dating back into the 1990s.
However, it was reportedly one 'schoolyard fight' between two teenage girls that first led authorities to the activities of the financier, which continued to unravel into the wide-reaching tale we know of today.

As reported by the Daily Beast, a fight allegedly took place in February 2005 in a gym class at Royal Palm Beach High School, between a 14-year-old girl and her best friend.
The fight – reportedly involving a girl who eventually became known as 'Jane Doe 1' in the Epstein case – saw her best friend call her a 'prostitute', leading the stepmother of the former to become suspicious.
Speaking to the grand jury in the eventual case against Epstein, Palm Beach Detective Joe Recarey recounted:
"[The stepmother] felt that there was some kind of sexual activity. [Jane Doe 1] had gotten into a fight at [Royal Palm Beach High School.]....After the fight, theory had discovered $300 in her purse....She had told them that she received it from a man in Palm Beach."
That man, as you can probably guess, was Jeffrey Epstein, who had paid the girl to give him a massage the weekend prior after being introduced by an older teenage girl who met Jane Doe 1 at a 'family football thing'.
After heading to Epstein's waterfront mansion in Palm Beach, she recalled him asking the older girl to assure him that Jane Doe 1 was 18-years-old, but notes that it was clear she was considerably younger.
"I was a little shrimp, didn't have boobs, and didn't look 18 at all," she revealed to the Daily Beast. "My face, the way I spoke, and my body didn't look like I was 18."

Upon conducting the massage, Epstein walked into the room with only a towel around his waist and instructed her to strip her clothes down to just her thong.
A police affidavit revealed that she was instructed to massage him while on top of his back, adding: "Epstein then turned to his side and started to rub his penis in an up and down motion. Epstein then pulled out a purple vibrator."
She confided in her friend that she had been paid to give Epstein a massage, leaving out the information involving the vibrator, but this eventually led to his arrest and became what's considered to be the first entry into the Epstein files that now comprises thousands of documents today.
