Seemingly the entire technology world has crashed to a halt following the release of Chinese startup DeepSeek's latest open source AI model, leaving many confused as to why this particular incident has proven to be so impactful.

Artificial intelligence has proven to be the new-age space race, where many of the world's biggest nations are rushing to secure dominance in what is likely the most significant emerging technology in a long while.

The release of OpenAI's ChatGPT was very much a glass-shattering moment in late 2022, as it saw not only a rapid acceleration in AI development but it also brought the technology straight into the mainstream.

Since then, many of the biggest tech companies in the world like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have focused their research efforts into AI, and companies like Nvidia have been able to capitalize on this boom by becoming one of the world's most valuable companies in an incredibly short period of time.

Then, almost out of nowhere came DeepSeek - a Chinese startup company releasing their very own ChatGPT-like AI model, developed with a budget of just $6,000,000 which has thrown out all previous expectations and understandings of AI in the US.

Why is everyone talking about DeepSeek?

The single biggest reason why DeepSeek has had such a significant impact is its budget - it shows that you don't need the multi-billion dollar investment that many US companies have been demanding to create a product on the same level.

It has soared up to the number one spot in the US free app charts, overtaking ChatGPT in the process, and the company estimates that it's around 20 to 50 times cheaper to use than its OpenAI rival, as reported by Reuters.

It proves not only that AI can be developed and operated on a much smaller budget, but also that the US isn't the only nation in play and China are more than capable of competing in the race for artificial general intelligence (AGI).

What impact has DeepSeek had on the world?

DeepSeek has certainly made an impression in US markets, as its release almost immediately crashed the stock market, causing companies like Nvidia to tank nearly $600,000,000,000 in what is being considered to be the largest single-day loss in market history.

It's also had a major effect on the individuals at the top of these companies, with people like Jensen Huang - CEO of Nvidia - losing $20,000,000,000 from his own net worth in the same short time period.

Statements from some of the biggest names in AI seem to suggest that the race is very much on though, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argued that while DeepSeek is 'impressive', it has spurred them on to release better models in the near future.

On top of this, US President Donald Trump has also claimed that this should be a 'wakeup call' for industry leaders, who should now be 'laser-focused' on competing to win.

This will likely only accelerate AI development as the competition and urgency has grown stronger for both sides, so think of this as only the beginning of what's to come for humanity in the future.
