Google might just have released one of the most impactful AI tools ever, as people have been left stunned by image editing software 'Nano Banana', hinting that it could change everything forever.

ChatGPT has dominated the world of artificial intelligence since its release in November 2022, and while there has been plenty of competition from Google, Meta, and Elon Musk's xAI, it has largely remained on top across all fronts.

However, Google has been making major strides in the image and video department, with the release of their scarily realistic Veo software being just one part of what could be a game-changing toolset.

Its latest release might just take the cake though, as the long-rumored 'Nano Banana' image editing model is finally here, and it represents a giant leap that could be incredibly difficult for rivals to compete with.

What is Nano Banana?

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced the long-awaited release of Nano Banana in a post on X, writing:

"Our image editing model is now rolling out in Gemini — and yes, it's 🍌🍌 [...] It's especially good at maintaining likeness across different contexts."

Our image editing model is now rolling out in @Geminiapp - and yes, it’s 🍌🍌. Top of @lmarena’s image edit leaderboard, it’s especially good at maintaining likeness across different contexts. Unlike traditional image generation tools that are available through countless AI models – including Google's own Gemini – Nano Banana specializes in image transformation and editing, in that it allows users to change and adapt photos into whatever they desire.

For example, Pichai has used an image of his dog Jeffree to create a number of new images where his pet is a surfer, cowboy, superhero, and chef, and it's just a taste of what you can do with the tool.

Others across social media have used it to change the outfit that someone is wearing in a photo, make someone who is looking away look towards the camera, and even merge two images seamlessly into one, with plenty of other wild examples.

How much better is Nano Banana than its rivals?

What makes Nano Banana stand out so much beyond it's frightening potential is quite how much better it is than almost every other similar model on the market right now, as people have branded it a 'giant leap' comparatively.

"The ELO ranking difference between No. 1 (Nano Banana) and No. 2 is similar to the difference between No. 2 and No. 10. It's not incremental at all. It's a giant leap," writes one comment on Reddit.

It also, as Pichai points out in his post, has placed at the top of Imarena.ai's respected 'Image Edit Arena' benchmarking rankings, sitting comfortably above Black Forest Labs' Flux 1 Kontext Max in second place.

🚨🍌Breaking News: Gemini-2.5-Flash-Image-Preview (“nano-banana”) by @GoogleDeepMind now ranks #1 in Image Edit Arena. In just two weeks:

"Sincerely impressed," declares another commenter. "No other editing model I've tried can do anything remotely like this, especially with this level of quality."

People have also been impressed by the speed at which it can generate these edited images, with suggestions that we're not far off the point where models will be able to produce results instantly.

Of course, as is the case with almost every new innovation in the AI world it probably won't be too long until someone else catches up, but Google has certainly made a statement with this new release, and it could be what the tech giant needs to carve ahead of its rivals.
