You might not have heard of Emulate, a brand new AI start-up based in London, but despite being just a month old it is already on the verge of securing around $700 million in funding with a total valuation of nearly $4 billion.
Officially incorporated in August, key to the excitement surrounding Emulate are the figures behind its founding as they are a group of ex-employees at Google's DeepMind AI lab.
As reported by the Financial Times, Jack Parker-Holder, Matthew McGill, and Philip Ball all worked at DeepMind to help create the Project Genie World Models, allowing users to generate interactive 3D environments using AI.
It is predominantly the reputation of these founders – earned through the significant work they have achieved in recent times – that has driven such impressive funding despite the company's young age, with investors like Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners rushing to support Emulate in the hope that they'll be participating in the next big evolution in AI tech.
What are World Models and why are they so valuable?
Unlike the large language models (LLMs) that most people are familiar with these days, with Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT leading the charge, World Models like Genie operate more akin to a simulation, but with even greater potential.

According to Nvidia, World Models are interactable creations that see AI models "understand the dynamics of the real world, including physics and spatial properties," with the key ability to predict what happens next when certain factors are introduced.
The broader goal following the creation of World Models is to "teach AI how to behave in the real world," and these could prove to be vital as the capability of models continues to increase, potentially reaching 'superhuman' status in the next few years.
"A new generation of world foundation models are now pretrained on massive real-world and infinite synthetic data, not just to generate but also reason and predict based on physics laws," Nvidia explains.
"A pretrained foundation model handles the heavy lifting; targeted post-training on proprietary data handles the rest — cutting development from years to months."

This could also prove to be a major shift in how the gaming world operates, at least if you take the stock market as a reflection, with tumbling valuations for GTA 6 publisher Take-Two, Roblox, and game engine Unity following the release of Genie in January.
Emulate isn't the only DeepMind offshoot
The success of Emulate hasn't happened in isolation either, as several other projects operated by ex-DeepMind employees have secured multi-billion-dollar valuations with similar funding successes in recent times.
David Silver, a former DeepMind researcher, managed to raise around $1 billion of funding for his new $5 billion start-up, Ineffable Intelligence, with ex-OpenAI and DeepMind employees also working together to create Recursive Superintelligence, building a valuation of $4 billion in the process with $600 million in funding.
