Sony slammed as major horror franchise is missing from 'best' showcase in years

All those rumors got our hopes up for nothing

Sony has just tossed another live grenade into the simmering console wars, and while the idea of console exclusivity has largely been thrown to the side, major Xbox exclusives like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Gears of War: Reloaded find a new home on PlayStation. The Blue Team is being a little more protective over its first-party titles, meaning we're still some way off the idea that The Last of Us or God of War will be booting up on Xbox.

With E3 kicking the bucket in 2023, we've seen an uptick in individual showcases from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. While Sony has been called out for a lack of PlayStation games this generation, the June 4 Sony State of Play came back with a bang and has been heralded as the 'best' in years.

There's still no sign of the next Resident Evil (Capcom)

Giving a closer look at the 4v4 Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, IO Interactive's much-hyped 007: First Light, and Team Ninja's Nioh 3, we also got a Silent Hill f release date, an ape-filled Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater gameplay trailer, and confirmation of a Ghost of Yōtei State of Play in July.

There was a lot to pack in, including a long-awaited update on Capcom's Pragmata.

Sony originally revealed the game back in 2020, but after it missed a 2022 release date and was paused indefinitely in 2023, this sci-fi slugger has promised it's coming back in 2026.

The problem is, with Capcom working hard on Pragmata, it doesn't look like there was any room for one of its other major franchises. As Capcom's best-selling series, Resident Evil has been giving us frights and fun since it first launched on the OG PlayStation back in 1996. Although Resident Evil has long since branched out to become a multi-platform series, there were strong rumors that Resident Evil 9 would be revealed at the State of Play.

Over on X, numerous people were calling the State of Play the 'best' Sony has given us in years, if not the best of all time. Still, that won't help ease the pain of Resident Evil fans who can't wait to be infected with the T-Virus once again.

Resident Evil: Village released as the ninth mainline game in 2021, and despite there being the acclaimed RE4 remake in 2023, the gap between entries is getting a little concerning.

There was a five-year gap between Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 7, but even if RE9 is revealed this year, there's a chance it might not release in 2026.

Responding to the lack of Resident Evil 9 but fact some classic RE games were announced for PS Plus, one worried gamer wrote: "The way everyone hyped up for re9 but got hitted with original re games is giving Swifties hyping up for reputation and getting hitted with her original albums."

Another added: "Imagine me discovering my husband is cheating… tragic, yes. But NOTHING absolutely NOTHING compares to the emotional devastation of Capcom ghosting us on Resident Evil 9. That’s not betrayal, that’s psychological warfare!"

A third said: "Really enjoyed the State of Play last night, some great trailers, but I am a bit disappointed there's no Resident Evil 9 trailer. I wasn't confirmed to be shown but so many fans myself included just want a little something at this point."

There are now strong rumors that we'll get a reveal at Summer Game Fest, but get ready to put on your clown makeup once again.

If you feel bad for the Resiverse, spare a thought for Dino Crisis. Now there's a Capcom series that's gone 'extinct'.
