While it might not be the biggest time for releases, summer is by far the hottest period for announcements in the gaming world - yet silence from PlayStation is beginning to worry some fans as they look to the future.
What was E3 (and is now Summer Game Fest) is where most of the year's biggest trailers are fielded by giants of the industry, and although not every big name explicitly takes part in Geoff Keighley's showcase, almost all run major showcases around the same period.
Previous PlayStation Showcases have revealed new games in many of Sony's biggest franchises, from Spider-Man to God of War, and the near-yearly event demands the attention of gamers worldwide.

However, relative quiet from PlayStation in regards to a Summer Showcase has left many fans of Team Blue feeling worried. It comes as rumors paint a potentially troubling future for the console giant.
While nothing has been explicitly confirmed either way by Sony at the time of writing, rumors from gaming insider John Harker appear to suggest that there won't be a PlayStation Summer Showcase or State of Play to go alongside Summer Game Fest this year.
The rumor itself indicates that there won't actually be one until September, and it's unclear whether it will be just a standard event or elevated to the status of a Showcase, which typically shows off the biggest upcoming PlayStation titles.

This wouldn't be the first time that this has happened, as last year was absent from any events during the summer period and had no Showcase whatsoever - a first since the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of E3.
There are still a number of major PlayStation exclusives scheduled to come out this year, including Death Stranding 2 next month and Ghost of Yotei in October, alongside a number that are yet to receive a release date. Unfortunately, many fans still fear that continued silence from Sony is a worrying sign.
It's safe to say that people haven't exactly taken the news well, with many PlayStation owners up in arms at the lack of any communication from Sony in what lots of people consider to be the busiest period of the year.
"So another year with zero hype for PlayStation during the summer," wrote one fan in frustration on X. "At least we have the Xbox showcase to look at all the games that will be coming to PS5 as well. I knew nothing was gonna happen when I saw random social media and blog posts for Ghost of Yotei."

Rockstar Games has proven that you don't necessarily need an event to show off your game, but at the same time almost no release can boast the hype and fan excitement that a new Grand Theft Auto holds.
You also have to consider the soon-to-be-released Nintendo Switch 2, which has already been a source of frustration for PlayStation fans as a previously exclusive title has been ripped away from them.
Gamers have also largely agreed on the speculated reason why Sony might be foregoing any event over the summer, and it all links to the numerous exclusive live service titles that have either failed upon release or been cancelled mid-development in the past couple of years.

"So many cancelled live service games. It's not surprising," argues one of the most popular comments on the r/playstation subreddit, with another speculating that they "imagine Marathon was going to be a big part of this, had it gone down well," wondering in addition that "surely they must have more to show though."
Couple this with news of an upcoming major price hike, and you can't blame many fans for feeling a bit pessimistic at this moment in time.
