Sony remains a Goliath of the gaming scene in 2026, with its exclusive titles being one of the major reasons we're still stumping up for PlayStation consoles.

We've come a long way from the OG PlayStation duking it out with the Nintendo 64 in the 1990s, although you're sure to find loyal defenders in both corners.

The gaming world has evolved a lot since then, but back in the day, the PlayStation was the only place you could play Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider.

It was also where we first cut our teeth on the horrors of Resident Evil.

While the long-running Resident Evil series was once shackled to PlayStation in terms of exclusivity, it's long since become a multi-platform franchise.

That's definitely worked in Capcom's favor, with 2026's Resident Evil Requiem already looking like it'll be one of the year's biggest games.

There were recent rumbles that PlayStation might be moving back to its exclusivity model after dabbling with PC releases, meaning things could soon be going back to the early days of the gaming ecosystem.

Speaking of which, we know that some of those '90s classics are worth a small fortune. We previously covered how rare copies of 1996's Resident Evil can fetch up to $2,000, but you might want to head up into the attic and dust off your collection for a closer look. Well, that's if you fancy an extra $10,000 in your bank account.

Heritage Auctions is currently holding a sale on signature games, covering everything from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Sega Genesis, N64, and more. You'll recognize beloved titles like GoldenEye 007 and the aforementioned Crash Bandicoot, as well as more obscure ones like McDonald's Treasure Land.

While it's not unusual to see 1985's Super Mario Bros. going for ludicrous sums (one is currently listed for $2,400 on Heritage), it's eclipsed by a copy of Resident Evil.

This 'exceptional copy' of this Capcom classic is listed as "Resident Evil - Wata 9.8 A+ Sealed [Ridged Longbox, First Production], PS1 Capcom 1996 USA".

Referring to it as one of the most influential games of the 1990s, we're also reminded how that first trip to the Spencer Mansion popularized the survival horror genre. If not for Resident Evil, would we have seen the likes of BioShock, Silent Hill, and Dead Space?

The listing explains: "Of the six examples of the highly sought-after first production variant of Resident Evil listed in PSA/Wata's December 2025 population report, this incredible copy holds the top grade, a distinction made even more striking when contrasted with the 21 examples of the standard, later production jewel case variant on the same census."

Complete with covert art from the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz, this near-mint copy will set you back a jaw-dropping $10,500. With the buyer's premium, that comes out at a bank-busting $13,125.00.

It's important to remember that's only the current bid, and with 22 days left on the auction at the time of writing, there's every chance this copy will go for even more.

Even though this particular disc of Resident Evil is a game well out of the price range for most of us, it's still a far cry from the most expensive game ever sold. Unlike the person who splashed $2 million on a copy of Super Mario Bros. in August 2021, we imagine most of us will be spending a little less on our gaming collection.
