It's been a long time coming, and while it isn't quite as long as the wait between GTA V and GTA 6, it's fair to say some of you have been waiting a while for the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch.
While you might typically associate the console wars with Microsoft and Sony duking it out with their respective Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Nintendo has been happily playing in the corner, on its own, with the Nintendo Switch.
2025 was supposed to be a massive year for gaming thanks to the release of the Switch 2 AND GTA 6, but with the latter being shunted into 2026, Nintendo is free to scoop up all those GTA players just in time for Christmas.

Although rumors of a mythical Switch Pro never amounted to much, it turns out we're getting something much better in the form of a full-blown Switch 2.
Then again, with the OG releasing in 2017, we're more than due for an upgrade.

There's already been plenty of controversy, with some baulking at the idea of $80 Switch games, while the console's price tag has been thrown into question thanks to President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.

Even before there were concerns about how his tech war against China would affect the Switch 2, some were questioning the console's $450 price tag.
The harshest critics have claimed the Switch 2 isn't enough of an evolution from its predecessor, meaning features like a 7.9-inch screen with 1080p resolution, 4K capabilities, and 256GB of internal storage just don't justify the price hike.
As an added extra, Nintendo Life reports that the addition of the new 'GL' and 'GR' buttons on the rear of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and on the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip means you can set up specific button-mapping profiles depending on which game you're playing.
Hyping our new button-mapping freedom, Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development & Publishing at Nintendo of America, explained: "For me, personally, one thing I'll automatically reassign there is clicking in sticks. I've never liked that. It's because I'm such a stressful gamer that I probably apply too much force to those things anyways.

"I'm the guy who is all of a sudden crouching. It's because I've jammed in the left stick. So I'll probably go into those buttons to remap.”

Referring to the 'beauty' of the system, Bihldorff continued: "You're going to be able to map your controller preferences by game and by profile. So once you have that thing perfect, the next time you boot that game up, you're booting it up as you, it's going to have your profile saved. It's going to be just like the experience that you want."
Others on Reddit were equally impressed, with one fan cheering: "This is a big deal. Both for accessibility, but also just generally enjoying games."
Another added: "This is big! When I first got into Nintendo I found it weird that A and B are the opposite from PC/Xbox. And then some games made you jump with Y (X in the Switch). My mind boggled!"
A third said: "This is amazing news, I'm used to tweak the controls in every game I play on Steam Deck and I really miss this functionality when playing on consoles, really glad to hear that I will be able to do the same on the Switch 2."

For those who played GoldenEye 007 back in the day and remember all the different controller profiles, this could be a godsend. More than this, you can program a specific button to screenshot and capture those epic in-game moments at the literal press of a button.
