How tech predicted wearer would develop ‘mystery’ illness before symptoms hit
Danielle Fowler, an Oura Ring convert, bought the electronic device to make use of its Cycle Insights, a feature that allows people with periods to track and adapt their lifestyle in line with whatever phase they’re in.
After wearing the titanium band for three months, she discovered that the band would combine her nightly average body temperature and HRV (variation in the time between consecutive heartbeats), to create a period prediction window.
Each morning, she was given a ‘resilience’ score out of 100, and on one day her data suggested she was ill. The interesting thing? She’d yet to exhibit any symptoms.
“When I checked the app one morning, it alerted me to ‘major signs’ of something straining my body. My HRV, sleep, and readiness levels were all in the red, but I felt fine,” she confessed
“Fast forward 24 hours, and I was lying in bed with the flu.”
