Last week, Apple announced a range of new products during its highly anticipated ‘Surprise and shine’ event, with the tech giant unveiling the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max as well as the company’s first ever foldable phone, the iPhone Duo.
News of a foldable device is by no means a novelty for the phone industry at this point, as foldable smartphones have been commercially available since 2018.
Samsung was among the early manufacturers to release the tech, with the firm’s Samsung Galaxy Fold officially being released back in 2019. Now, seven years on, Apple has finally caught up with their own version.
The iPhone Duo comes with a thin screen layer to minimize the visibility of a crease along the screen where it folds, and when unfolded, will be Apple’s thinnest model yet.

The hinge of the phone has also been engineered to support the device, with Apple stating: “The central structural plane has support ribs for added stiffness. To make the frame even more rigid, the antenna splits are reinforced with high performance inserts. They’re made from ceramic fibers that are three times stronger than grade five titanium. Together these structural details make iPhone Duo feel exceptionally solid every time you use it.”

Samsung Display is involved in the making of iPhone Duo
However, a little-known fact is that Samsung Display plays a part in the making of the iPhone Duo after the firm signed an exclusive agreement to supply display panels for the phone.
It has been reported that Apple will be paying Samsung Display a whopping $250 for each panel the firm orders, according to Instant Digital, which will be factored into the iPhone Duo’s hefty price tag starting from $1,999.
Apple’s folding phone is also considered to be the first phone to include Samsung’s M16 OLED material set, as per MacRumors.
Pre-orders for the phone will begin in October, with the iPhone Duo expected to be released later next month.
But the iPhone Duo isn’t the only phone sparking excitement after last week’s announcements, and the latest model of iPhone comes with some serious upgrades including new capabilities with Siri AI.
The revamped digital assistant will be able to ‘take actions in your apps, including third-party apps’. Meanwhile, the battery life is purported to be the longest in iPhone history.

Introducing the new device, new Apple CEO John Ternus shared in his keynote address: “I love the idea that the things we make help people be more creative, more productive, and maybe even do things they didn't think possible before. I love that we lead with our values and we infuse them into everything that we do. We obsess over the details.
“We care enormously about design and simplicity. We want our products to be incredibly powerful, but we also want them to be simple and natural and intuitive. And look, at the end of the day, we just want to make things that have a meaningful impact in people's lives.”
