An alarming number of ChatGPT users are cancelling their subscriptions in recent weeks, as dissatisfaction appears to be brewing after disappointing changes were made to the AI service.

The numbers are hard to deny for ChatGPT, as record sign ups and widespread integration indicate that it's arguably the leading for in the artificial intelligence takeover, especially since it effectively got there first.

This is especially true following the release of its Sora video tool, which allows users to create frighteningly realistic clips that could have worrying implications for the future.

Not everything is all great though, as there remains a not-insignificant number of ChatGPT users that are growing frustrated with what the service has to offer, and it's even led them to cancel their Pro subscriptions outright.

We've already seen this happen with the release of the new GPT-5 model, as countless people were left aghast at the changes in language, especially those who have forged a romantic connection with their AI chatbot – affectionately named 'Chatty'.

It appears as if that trend has continued throughout countless updates post-GPT-5, with a number of users expressing their dissatisfaction on the r/ChatGPT subreddit.

"There's a lot of dissatisfaction around ChatGPT lately," writes one post, asking fellow users if "any of y'all cancelling the subscription?"

Countless comments underneath the post have shared how they've hit the cancel button, alongside those seemingly laughing at the service's attempts to get them to stay with discounted price offers.

The frustration among paying users appears to surround the guardrails and safeguarding measures that were recently introduced, specifically after a number of troubling incidents that included one teenager tragically committing suicide.

"Cancelled the moment they muzzled GPT-5," wrote one user in frustration. "Used to be so uncensored and so free. And now, one word and filters and censorships be flooding in."

Another commenter added that "hopefully they start treating the paying adult customers like adults. I have a pro membership, and my membership renews every first of the month.

"I paid $200 on October 1st, just for the guardrails to go up on October 3rd... So I pretty much paid for a system to treat me like a toddler 2 days later LOL FML."

It's not the same situation for everyone in the thread though, as others have noted no difference in how they interact with the model since the changes were introduced.

"I haven't hit the guardrails once, so for my use, I'm happy," a third explains. "Obviously, I've been following along here, and I know this only applies to me, it clearly hasn't been a smooth ride for many."
