Explanation after Sam Altman declared dead on Google
The tech world has been left scrambling for clarification after Sam Altman's Wikipedia page appeared to wrongfully claim the OpenAI CEO had passed away at the age of 41.
For at least a brief time on August 12, 2026, Sam Altman's Wikipedia claimed he'd died, and with this, it looks like Google picked it up as well.
When you now type the tech mogul's name into the popular search engine and go to the 'all' tab, it includes a picture of him, the latest news about him, his net worth, and lists him as very much alive.

With confusion about what's gone wrong, people on Reddit pointed out the change to his Wikipedia, which can be altered without even having an account.
After a Wikipedia vandal listed August 12 as the date of Altman's mythical death, Google's automated systems seemingly ingested the change into his Knowledge Panel.
Alongside continued complaints about how companies like Google use AI to update their systems, it's noted that automated algorithms continuously scrape sites like Wikipedia to keep search summaries updated.
Even though Wikipedia editors were quick to rectify the change, it wasn't before Google briefly declared Altman deceased.
The irony of this and the 'Dead Internet Theory' wasn't lost on the depths of Reddit, especially as Altman himself has previously discussed the idea that the internet is now just bots talking to bots.
In September 2025 post on X, the AI overlord mused: "I never took the dead internet theory that seriously but it seems like there are really a lot of LLM-run twitter accounts now."
We don't imagine this latest death hoax will do much to dissuade him from believing that the Dead Internet Theory is alive and well.
