Gamers finally have fix to PlayStation 5's DualSense stick drift issue

This could finally be the day we've all been waiting for, as there now appears to be a fix available for the stick drift issue that so many gamers run into every single year, ending the frustration you've likely experienced when using your PlayStation 5.

It's almost a case of when and not if as to whether your PlayStation 5 DualSense controller will end up getting stick drift or not, and the same applies to pretty much every other controller from both Nintendo and Xbox too.

While it might not seem like a huge deal at first, stick drift can genuinely make gaming impossible in some scenarios, especially in certain games where precision with the analog sticks is vital.

If you've somehow been lucky enough to avoid the issue, stick drift is when one of your controller's analog sticks starts moving independently from your own inputs, often 'drifting' off to the left or right with erratic and unpredictable movements.

It's an issue that's seemed impossible to solve with the only resolution to simply buy a new controller – something that's sparked conspiracy theories as to why companies have been reluctant to remedy the problem – yet it appears as if a fix has finally emerged and it could be the thing that gets rid of stick drift for good.

Shared by console and controller technician 'modyfikatorcasper' on X, a new computer program known as Driftguard appears to remove instances of drift in PlayStation 5 controllers, letting you return to your games in peace.

As reported by GAMINGbible, the app itself appears to recalibrate your controller's analog sticks, effectively recentering them at the point that the drift occurs to 'trick' your controller into acting normally.

The video runs down the simple steps that you can follow to do this, which involves switching your controller over to Bluetooth mode by pressing the power and options button simultaneously, and then all you need to do is head to driftguard.app to start the process.

One major caveat though is that it appears to only 'fix' minor instances of drift, doing nothing for more extreme cases, and it also seems as if it's merely a correction instead of solving the issue, meaning that the drift could return in a worse state down the line.

"No program can fix what friction destroys from constant use of rubber and plastic parts with any program," explains one reply to the post, with another adding that "this seems like it just calibrates the sticks to whatever the drift point is, essentially hiding the issue."

The video does illustrate that not all cases of drift can be fixed this way though, advising people who are still experiencing the issue to physically replace their joysticks — specifically with TMR Angle Sensors, which are the newest (and presumably best) technology.
