People divided after Starbucks launches pork-flavoured coffee in China

People divided after Starbucks launches pork-flavoured coffee in China

Some customers like it and others really don't.

Starbucks is known to spice things up and give tea and coffee drinkers something to look forward to throughout the year.

From festive hot chocolates in the winter months, to flavourful ice teas to cool down with in the summer.

However, the latest launch from the coffeehouse chain is not to everyone's taste buds.

The limited edition pork-flavoured coffee launched on February 10 to honour the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

And it's not just pork flavouring either - the special latte actually comes with a pork serving.

The coffee hub chain announced that it would 'integrate traditional New Year customs into coffee' in which they combined espresso with 'Dongpo sauce' which is a reference to a famous 11th-century poet.

Steamed milk is also added to the beverage before it's finished with more pork sauce and garnished with braised pork.

The creative hot drink translates as 'Abundant Year Savory Latte', or listed by its English name, 'Lucky Savory Latte.'

The Chinese culture claims that 'eating meat means prosperity in the coming year.'

However, this strange combination has divided people.

One user on Xiaohongshu - China's Instagram equivalent - stated that although the latte looked strange, it was unexpectedly delicious with an 'intriguing sweet and salty flavor.'

However, another Xiaohongshu user was not so impressed and said it was disgusting. They described the coffee as tasting like fermented bean curd mixed with a sweetener, though they supposedly enjoyed the piece of pork.

Other users on China's Weibo platform weren't so set on the hot drink's combination, although most seemed satisfied with the pork serving.

Depending on what time you drink your coffee, I don't think most of us would be tempted to eat a slice of meat with our morning brew. But each to their own!

If you're wondering about the price of the drink, the limited edition coffee was priced at 68 yuan, which is around £7.50.

Despite Starbucks' steep prices on most of their product lines, people expressed a lot of criticism on social media about the expensive cost of this uniquely flavoured beverage.

Other social media users also came to share their two-pennies-worth.

One displeased person downright wrote: 'Good grief no!' whilst another X user tweeted: 'There are certain things in this world that should never be invented. And this is one of them.'

One fan even begged Starbucks to add a bacon option to the menu, writing: 'Mmmmmmm awww do a BACON ONE'.
