Passengers furious after 'graphic' X-rated movie played on every screen during flight and was 'impossible to turn off'

The movie wasn't suitable for all ages onboard

Dealing with delays is one thing, but having to sit through an awkward movie during it is another.

On October 5, passengers on Qantas flight QF59 from Sydney to Haneda Airport, Tokyo were in for a surprise when the airline's in-flight entertainment system malfunctioned.

With no personal entertainment options available, the crew decided to play a movie on every screen for their passengers.

However, the movie wasn't exactly a suitable one.

Reddit user u/MariKontan took to the thread r/QantasAirways to explain the 'in-flight entertainment system was down' onboard the flight, and 'after a one-hour delay, the pilot decided to take off anyway, but the only option left was for the crew to play a movie on every screen'.

To make matters worse, the film 'was impossible to pause, dim or turn [...] off.'

The user added that the X-rated film played for almost an hour before it was shut off, making the whole situation particularly uncomfortable for families and kids onboard.

The Reddit user continued: "Here’s the kicker: the movie they played was extremely inappropriate. It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the texts on screen without needing headphones."

The passenger also attached three images of 'the scenes' from the movie showing quite explicit text messages between the movie characters.

The user questioned: "How is this acceptable for a major airline? Has anyone else had something like this happen?"

Although the user didn’t name the film, media outlets and internet sleuths have identified it as the 2023 movie Daddio starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn.

The drama is set almost entirely in a New York City taxi and follows a chance encounter between a talkative cab driver (Penn) and his passenger (Johnson).

And it's not taken long for other social media users to weigh in.

"Bruh why wouldn't you just put on Shrek?" another suggested.

"That is actually insane, like surely when you get the list of movies available you choose the least likely to offend. Like Finding Nemo or Despicable Me," added another user. "How do you choose a movie that’s for mature audiences?"

Qantas said in a previous statement that the crew chose the movie 'based on the request from a number of passengers,' - quite a strange decision as to why the airline didn't opt for a more family-friendly option like a Disney movie instead.

A spokesperson for Quantas later told UNILAD that they 'sincerely apologise to customers for this experience.'

They added: "All screens were changed to a family friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible."
