PlayStation 5 players are discovering they may be putting their beloved consoles at risk with a common habit.

When Sony released its highly anticipated fifth-gen console, PS5 players were promised faster loading speeds, enhanced graphics and lots more processing power.

One of the standout features was its flexible design in that users could either place the console vertically or horizontally.

However, a gaming TikToker recently claimed that keeping your PS5 vertical might be damaging your console's health in the long run.

According to the video, the console’s liquid metal cooling system could spill or become uneven in a vertical position due to a design flaw in its cooling system. This supposedly affects the cooling of the APU (the main processor), leading to overheating and damage, the TikToker described.

And this TikToker isn't the only person concerned by this.

Several cases had been reported online where the seal between the PS5's APU and its cooler became compromised.

They argue that, when standing vertically, the liquid metal could flow unevenly and potentially cause damage to the internal components.

As such, tech experts are advising that PS5 players play it safe and keep their console horizontal until Sony officially addresses the issue.

But before you jump ahead and follow the advice of social media, some follow-up reports have challenged this.

For instance, Sony specifically designed the PS5 to work in either position, providing an official stand in the box for console stability.

Console hacking site Wololo.net, which had initially reported on the issue, weighed in on the question at hand.

They suggested that the risk of metal leakage is rare and not directly tied to the console's orientation rather than a widespread problem linked to all PS5 consoles.

Additionally, in an initial up close and detailed look at the console's hardware back in 2020, Sony’s hardware lead, Yasuhiro Ootori, confirmed that there is 'no significant difference in cooling performance whether your PS5 is vertical or horizontal,' as backed by PC Guide.

But the internet loves a big scare, so best to take your own stance on this one and place it in an orientation however works best for you.

Outside of positioning, ko keep your console in good shape, there are a few key steps you shouldn’t overlook.

Tech experts at PC Guide recommend keeping your console well-ventilated to prevent overheating of its internal components, minimise dust build-up where possible and be careful not to drop or bump your PS5, as this can cause serious damage.
