Recent leaked footage from GTA 6 has turned the gaming world upside down in the last day, yet while fans of the series are excited to see more, the originator of those leaks could soon face significant legal consequences for their actions.
Unlike footage or screenshots that simply pop up anonymously on forums or social media, this particular leak has a single known source, with 'CyberLeek' stepping forward to take credit in an attempt to hold developer Rockstar Games to account for their 'anti-consumer' practices.
While it's a bold and noble move – especially amid wider controversy surrounding Sony's decision to end physical production for PlayStation consoles – it could leave them on the receiving end of action from Rockstar's legal team, with a potentially major punishment depending on how far the legendary gaming developer is willing to take things.
What could complicate things further too is CyberLeek's request that people donate cryptocurrency so that they can continue to 'take action', as that's a concern both for fans of the series and the developers too.
What legal consequences could the leaker face?
There haven't been too many criminal cases involving video game leaks throughout history, but one of the most prominent did indeed involve GTA 6 as 18-year-old hacker Arion Kurtaj was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after stealing 90 clips of the game from Rockstar directly, as per the BBC.

It's unclear exactly where CyberLeek sourced the clips from – as that could play a big part in Rockstar's desire to take action – and while the simple assumption would be from the upcoming 'Extended Look' that'll be broadcast on Netflix later this month, the clips don't exactly seem to fit that type of presentation.

In Kurtaj's case he was deemed to be unfit to stand trial as a consequence of his severe autism, but if CyberLeek faced a judge they could be presented with charges like copyright infringement, data theft, hacking, and potentially even extortion as further leaks have been threatened if Rockstar doesn't apologize.
These sentences combined can add up to a prison sentence of over 45 years in the United States, with the severity of the charge likely related to how the footage was obtained, and whether the money earned from CyberLeek's crypto coin was also scrutinized.
If the leaker didn't directly steal from Rockstar and instead obtained the footage from someone else, that individual could also face scrutiny, either from hacking the developer or for breaking an non-disclosure agreement (NDA) likely signed before gaining access to the game.

Rockstar could simply ignore this recent leak – especially considering its proximity to the game's extended look and launch – but, as Pirat_Nation explains on X, the developer has a history of going after these types of data breaches.
"We know how hard Rockstar has gone after people who leaked GTA content in the past, and this guy was actually making money from the leaks," they explain.
"The guy is completely cooked," the post continued. "Rockstar is going to put a huge bounty on his head."
What do the GTA 6 leaks show?
The level of excitement associated with the leaks doesn't actually correlate that well to the level of content that was shown, as while footage did hint towards a revamp of the wanted system and let fans see more of the map, there's still little that we actually know about the game's features.
What it did show, however, was what appears to be each of the game's five separate counties and their designated landmarks, giving a sense of scale to a map that's expected to eclipse the previous entry in the series.

Additionally, the wanted system also looks to receive a major revamp – with Red Dead Redemption 2 likely laying the foundations – as not only do police chases operate in a more natural and potentially emergent way, but you also appear to have separate wanted statuses for your character, clothes, and vehicle.
Finally, short clips displayed Jason, one of the game's two main characters, gaining a bonus for his 'Focus' skill when shooting basketball hoops, indicating not only that new sports could be an option as a mini-game, but that there are enhanced RPG stats for you to level up.
